New collaboration improves sustainability in Swedish film industry
Several large firms within the Swedish film industry have committed themselves to the unique environmental collaboration Hållbar Film [Sustainable Film]. The regional film funds Film i Väst, Film i Skåne, Film Stockholm, Film på Gotland, and Filmpool Nord have all signed on to this collaborative effort to re-envision film production in order to establish consistent and sustainable methods across the industry.
Hållbar Film is a digital planning tool developed by sustainability experts Greentime AB in cooperation with Film i Väst. Hållbar Film assists production companies by structuring their assignments according to the UN’s global sustainability targets.
“The Swedish film industry holds great influence in society and can have a real impact towards a sustainable future. Unfortunately, current production methods are far from sustainable. The Swedish film industry has hitherto lacked the initiative to encourage and assist production companies,” says Ronny Fritsche, sustainability expert in the film and TV industries and Head Representative for Hållbar Film.
The film and TV industry leave their largest footprints during the production phase. Currently the European film industry primarily uses carbon calculators to measure the CO2 generated by productions – an environmentally one-sided approach. Hållbar Film is unique in that besides addressing environment factors, it also incorporate social and economic sustainability.
“For The regional film funds, Hållbar Film improves working conditions for the production companies while at the same time tracking and documenting the industry’s impact. This in turn provides the film funds with the means to set common, measurable goals, and a tool for requiring production companies to follow sustainable practices,” according to Fritsche.
“We’ve actually reached a milestone within the Swedish film industry. An upcoming goal is to develop a legitimate and effectual certification system together with the industry, although moving forward is our first concern,” says Simon Strandvik, CEO of Greentime AB.
